I love painting our local patch of bushland. It forms a corridor near our home in the middle of Sydney, and most mornings I walk the dogs through the park that sits within it. It never ceases to amaze me that this much greenery exists so close to the city, and I’m eternally grateful to have it on our doorstep.
With most of my paintings, I’m trying to capture a sense of the place without being too literal - to give the viewer a feeling for the space, a few glimpses of its elements, and allow them to fill in the gaps in whatever way they like. My favourite time of day down there is dawn, when the western sky can glow pink behind a tangle of gum tree branches, bursts of wattle and, sometimes, flowering jacarandas.
It can be a little wild … but can’t we all be?
