Shelly Beach is one of my favourite spots in Sydney. In this painting I chose to explore the meeting point between the dense bush of the headland and the inviting, clear waters of Cabbage Tree Bay, where the rugged rocks create a natural boundary between land and sea.
I was drawn to the contrast between the solidity of the bushland and rocks and the constantly shifting nature of the water below. The translucent shallows reveal the rocks beneath the surface, creating a sense of depth and inviting you to look more closely - can you spot the snorkeler?
I haven’t rolled out a towel on these rocks yet myself, but capturing the sunbathers up there reminds me of the sanctuary the shoreline provides as well as the freedom I feel being beside the ocean.
