Acrylic & oil on canvas
51x51cm
In my paintings, the layering of flat colour planes to cultivate a sense of depth creates a simultaneous pictorial flatness and spatial awareness. This aspect of the European Decorative Arts (inspired by Japanese woodblock prints) is a point of keen exploration, and I seek to investigate this art style through reference to the subject matter that most strongly informed it - nature. My paintings engage in a dialogue with nature by drawing upon the symbolism that the Victorian Language of Flowers (also known as floriography) designated to hundreds of flower and plant species, as a clandestine form of expression during a time where open and honest emotion was frowned upon.
Protea - Transformation (I am ever evolving), embarks on a metaphorical celebration and acknowledgement of self development, through the vehicle of the Protea, a symbol of transformation.
