The final piece in my Long Lunch series, capturing the last chapter of the Table Story—the beginning, middle and end of a shared meal.
The plates have been cleared, glasses emptied, stories exchanged and new memories made. But no one is quite ready for the night to end. The conversation has turned to the inevitable question: Where to next?
Growing up in Canada, we’d ask where we were going for a “final, final”—one last drink that was rarely ever the last. Here in Australia, I’ve come to know the same ritual as “kick ons.”
Different places, different expressions, but the same familiar feeling: the best moments are often the ones we aren’t quite ready to end.
