Acrylic on canvas
50x50cm, Framed
In my paintings, the layering of flat colour planes to cultivate a sense of depth creates a simultaneous pictorial flatness and spatial awareness. This aspect of the European Decorative Arts (inspired by Japanese woodblock prints) is a point of keen exploration, and I seek to investigate this art style through reference to the subject matter that most strongly informed it - nature. My paintings engage in a dialogue with nature by drawing upon the symbolism that the Victorian Language of Flowers (also known as floriography) designated to hundreds of flower and plant species, as a clandestine form of expression during a time where open and honest emotion was frowned upon.
Chrysanthemum - Condolences, speaks to the universal experience of loss and human suffering. Employing the Victorian language of flowers to invoke fundamental aspects of the human experience brings nature more directly into the periphery of emotional expression.
